What are Anchor Points in the Working at Height Industry?
Whilst working at height, anchor points are secure attachment points for fall protection systems. They are critical safety components designed to prevent workers from falling when working at elevated levels, such as on rooftops, scaffolds, or construction sites. The anchor point connects the worker’s personal fall protection equipment (e.g. harness, lanyard) and the structure they are working on.
Preventing Falls
The primary role of an anchor point is to provide a secure, fixed location to which workers can attach their fall arrest systems (harnesses, ropes, lanyards), preventing accidental falls from height.
Allowing Mobility
Anchor points, particularly horizontal lifelines and other specialised systems, allow workers to move within a designated area while remaining safely secured to the fall protection system.
Supporting Rescue Operations
Anchor points can also be used as attachment points for rescue lines or lowering devices in the event of an emergency.
Installation and Inspection of Anchor Points
Installation
Anchor points should be installed by trained professionals who understand the structural integrity requirements and safety standards specific to the work environment.
Inspection and Maintenance
Regular inspection of anchor points is required to ensure they have not been damaged or compromised. Anchor points should be proof tested for load-bearing capacity, corrosion, and wear. Workers must be trained to inspect the points before use. These are tested every 12 months, unless they are used for rope access then the inspection is every 6 months in line with LOLER.
